York Centrifugal Chiller techs………On the older York YTK chillers from early 2000’s, a lot of them used the 6-spring style shaft seal. We have had a few issues with those not lasting very long; thrust is within specs ( .015 ). I want to replace the 6-spring seal with the bellows style seal; which is a conversion with new cover plate. Has anybody had luck doing this and are the bellows seals a better solution. Please advise

I know the conversion kit is 10K or close the maintenance kit around 4.5K and the 6 Spring around 2.5K. I have heard two sides. some went back to 6 spring after the bellows and I heard some say the bellows have held up. I will do more digging.

Thank you Brian. I have researched this via some old YTK York chiller dogs as well and your information is spot on.. I could not find a reason that justifies the extra cost to convert to the bellows style so I just ordered the 6 spring seal. Appreciate the feedback sir.

JCI has the upgrade, Texas Air systems can also get it. Yes the bellows are better. make sure you follow procedures for replacement. if you dont have the procedure i can email it to you

Thank you Paul, appreciate the feedback. We have already replaced the seal with the 6-spring seal. We did not do the conversion. There seems to be conflicting opinions on this subject, that is for sure.

Paul,
can Texas Air System sell Lippert Mechanical Service OEM York chiller parts? We currently use both Baltimore Parts and Midwest Parts out of Louisville. Let me know and I will get us setup with an account. We like purchasing parts from Authorized dealers that actually work on the chillers; that always seems beneficial to the field techs. I’m a retired York mechanic, the bellows are better seals, but having said that, I have run YT chillers 15 to 20 years with those old style seals. Is your chiller going into a surge?
